SqueezeRadio on the radio
Development update · October 13, 2026
The Squeezebox Radio display now has its own SqueezeRadio interface. This is a development preview tested on one Squeezebox Radio with stock firmware 7.7.3 r16676. Distribution remains paused during the third-party licensing review; this page describes the tested device, not a new downloadable release.
Now Playing
- Large song or artist artwork when the lookup service has a matching image.
- Larger sans-serif labels and scrolling artist and station names.
- A 12-hour clock with AM/PM.
- Wi-Fi signal bars, battery percentage, a lightning bolt while charging and AC on external power when not charging. These readings come from the radio; battery percentage is an estimate.
- Purple Glow, Graphite Gray, Mint, Rose and Lavender themes. Choose SqueezeRadio → Display theme. The selection is saved on the radio.
Graphite Gray, Mint, Rose and Lavender use neutral dark surfaces with gray, soft green, pink or purple accents. Purple Glow retains the purple gradient. All five keep the same controls and artwork layout. The station row is aligned to the bottom of the artwork. The compact battery uses an original white rounded outline with a continuous fill: red at 20% or below, yellow through 50%, and green above 50%. Its complete footprint remains 25 × 12 pixels. A separate white lightning bolt indicates charging. The battery label shows its percentage (or -- when unknown), with no CHG or AC text. The icons are pre-rendered original assets, replacing the earlier faulty drawing experiment.
Preset buttons
Play a station, then hold one of the six numbered buttons to save it to that slot. A three-second confirmation shows “Preset N saved” and the station name after the settings are stored. The radio also plays its standard confirmation sound when sound effects are enabled. Tap a numbered button to recall its station.
Artwork availability
Artwork depends on useful artist/song metadata and an external lookup service. The result may be an album cover or artist image; not every song has a match. Missing or slow artwork does not stop playback.
The original fetcher uses the iTunes Search API and requests 300×300 artwork. Matching depends on artist/song metadata; version labels and missing catalog entries can prevent a match. Oversized or stale results are rejected. Temporary request failures get bounded retries.
Radio Info
Choose SqueezeRadio → Radio Info for the local IP address, firmware, hardware, uptime, memory and installed-component checks. An installed component is not necessarily running. This screen does not display pairing keys or Wi-Fi passwords.
Why the stock Wi-Fi icon can be red
The firmware’s original icon combines network and music-server status. It can indicate a missing music-server connection even while a standalone stream works. SqueezeRadio’s signal bars use the firmware’s network reading; they are not a guarantee that every internet service is reachable.
What is ours, and what still powers it
SqueezeRadio now supplies the original station player, metadata/artwork fetcher, preset storage, display, themes and hardware utilities. The tested radio no longer loads StandaloneRadio or HTTPSProxy. Existing station choices and controller pairing are preserved.
The installed Logitech firmware still provides decoding, audio output and device APIs. Our transport uses licensed OpenSSL/musl with HTTPS certificate and hostname checks enabled. Our original clock service uses the firmware time utility; licensed mDNS provides the hostname. The old community radio/proxy/clock applets have been removed from the device. This is a development replacement tested on one device, not a claim of dependency-free software or a completed public-release audit. See components.
The native iOS app remains separate and proprietary and plays streams directly.
The hardware toolkit and instructions remain provided AS IS, without warranty. See dependency notices and troubleshooting.
